3 Nephi 24:16-17
Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another, and the Lord hearkened and heard; and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon his name. And they shall be mine, saith the Lord of Hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them as a man spareth his own son that serveth him.
Fear God and remember him: the two prerequisites to becoming one of the jewels of the Lord. He asks only that we love him and remember him. We do not have to perform some magnificent feat of bravery. We do not have to conquer an army, we only have to conquer ourselves. We do not have to be perfect, we only have to want to be perfect. There is no work we can do that will save us. We just have to love God, keep him and his plan in our thoughts, and do our best. We do not make ourselves jewels, Christ makes us precious gems through his Atonement.
