For it is better that ye should deny yourselves of these things, wherein ye will take up your cross, than that ye should be cast into hell.
To take up our cross is to sacrifice the things of the world that take us away from Christ. We have to give up the sins for which he went to the cross to pay on our behalf. We take up our cross when we accept his cross.
