Nephi is having a wilderness experience within a wilderness experience, a trial within a trial. He was faithful enough to follow his father into the wilderness, so now the Lord gives him a harder and more personal test. With greater gifts come greater challenges. If we pass a test of faith, we should not think that the Lord is done with us. He has only just begun.

First Nephi 3:9
And I, Nephi, and my brethren took our journey in the wilderness, with our tents, to go up to the land of Jerusalem.

He was faithful enough to follow his father into the wilderness, so now the Lord gives him a harder and more personal test. With greater gifts come greater challenges. If we pass a test of faith, we should not think that the Lord is done with us. He has only just begun.
