Nephi wrote all that he wrote with one purpose in mine, namely, to persuade us to come to God and be saved. His words are powerful and convincing to those who will read them. He is not trying to draw people to himself. Likewise, Joseph Smith did all that he did, not to gather people to him personally, but to gather them to Christ. We do not worship men, we worship Christ and the Father. Nevertheless, God inspires men to help us and guide us. We follow prophets not for the sake of the prophets but because they lead us to Christ. If we put our faith in any man, including a prophet, we will be disappointed. When we put our faith in Christ, however, we will be saved.

First Nephi 6:4
For the fulness of mine intent is that I may persuade men to come unto the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, and be saved.
