I say unto you, unless this be the case, they must be cast off; and this I know, because I was like to be cast off.
Alma knows what can happen to us when we are intentionally disobedient to God. Remember, Alma did not sin in ignorance. He willfully rebelled. He was not going to be cast off because he made mistakes, but because he purposely chose wickedness when he knew better. Christ's atonement covers our mistakes, but if we refuse to let him help us, we will be as if no atonement had been made. The good news of the gospel is that we choose the outcome of our life.
