Alma 14:11
But Alma said unto him: The Spirit constraineth me that I must not stretch forth mine hand; for behold the Lord receiveth them up unto himself, in glory; and he doth suffer that they may do this thing, or that the people may do this thing unto them, according to the hardness of their hearts, that the judgments which he shall exercise upon them in his wrath may be just; and the blood of the innocent shall stand as a witness against them, yea, and cry mightily against them at the last day.
While we are constrained in our understanding of life by the limitations of our mortality, God sees life and death differently. Death is not the ultimate evil many think it is. Physical death is not the end of life from God's perspective. It is just a transfer. He will not save everyone from death. What to our finite minds is a tragedy, is not tragic to God. It is simply his plan. How long we live and the circumstances of our death are entirely under his control. If we are being faithful, we need not fear that our death is untimely or unfair. God is never surprised when we show up on the other side of the veil. God does not have to save us in mortality because Christ has already saved us in eternity. The end of life here is merely a step towards the resurrection and immortality to come. Losing a loved one is not easy, but it is not the end.
