I say unto you, it is well that ye are cast out of your synagogues, that ye may be humble, and that ye may learn wisdom; for it is necessary that ye should learn wisdom; for it is because that ye are cast out, that ye are despised of your brethren because of your exceeding poverty, that ye are brought to a lowliness of heart; for ye are necessarily brought to be humble.
God has many ways to humble us. Each person is unique in what causes him or her to abandon pride, give up the notion of total self-sufficiency, and look to the power of the Redeemer. God knows us better than we know ourselves, and he has a plan to give us the best opportunity to turn to him. Being humbled may not be comfortable, but it is essential to our mortal experience so that we can return to God in the end.
