4 Nephi 1:2-3
And it came to pass in the thirty and sixth year, the people were all converted unto the Lord, upon all the face of the land, both Nephites and Lamanites, and there were no contentions and disputations among them, and every man did deal justly one with another. And they had all things common among them; therefore there were not rich and poor, bond and free, but they were all made free, and partakers of the heavenly gift.
Equality and unity are always characteristics of a believing people. These are not programs, but are the natural results of people living the gospel and following Christ. Look for willing and voluntary equality and unity, born out of a genuine love of God and neighbors, and you will find true Christians.

Alma 28:14
And thus we see the great call of diligence of men to labor in the vineyards of the Lord; and thus we see the great reason of sorrow, and also of rejoicing—sorrow because of death and destruction among men, and joy because of the light of Christ unto life.
How do we combat inequality in the world? It is not through social programs or legislation. It is the preaching of the gospel and the converting of souls unto Christ. Repentance and covenants lead to righteousness, which qualifies us for the Holy Ghost, who bestows the gift of charity. Charity is the antidote for selfishness, which is the root of inequality. Jesus is the solution.

Alma 16:16
And there was no inequality among them; the Lord did pour out his Spirit on all the face of the land to prepare the minds of the children of men, or to prepare their hearts to receive the word which should be taught among them at the time of his coming
Equality is always a hallmark of the presence of the gospel. When we have the fullness of the gospel and the pure love of Christ, we just naturally take care of each other. We don't need a government or even the Church to tell us when to give and how much. We simply cannot rest when others are in need.
