Mormon 5:2

But behold, I was without hope, for I knew the judgments of the Lord which should come upon them; for they repented not of their iniquities, but did struggle for their lives without calling upon that Being who created them.

Just as Mormon could not forsake his people, even though he had no hope for them, God never forsakes his children, even when they refuse to repent. He loves all his children eternally and wants every single one to return to him. To paraphrase Elder D. Todd Christofferson, God's love is eternal but not unconditional. The word "unconditional" does not appear in the scriptures. What we read there is that we must repent, keep the commandments, and love God and our fellow man. Otherwise, the mercy of Christ's Atonement can have no effect on us, and justice must take effect. God's love will not save us if we do not qualify for mercy. He knows the end from the beginning, and so he knows how the test of mortality will turn out for each of us, but he never gives up and never walks away. We may turn our backs on him, but he does not turn his back on us.

Alma 34:10

For it is expedient that there should be a great and last sacrifice; yea, not a sacrifice of man, neither of beast, neither of any manner of fowl; for it shall not be a human sacrifice; but it must be an infinite and eternal sacrifice.

Christ's atoning sacrifice is infinite in scope and eternal in duration. It covers every single sin committed by every single individual from the very first to the very last. He missed absolutely nothing and no one. He has positively guaranteed us that if we want to repent and apply for mercy, he is good for it. Our debt is paid in full. No fine print, hidden costs, surcharges, or footnotes. No one is excluded. No one will be turned away. No one will show up at the Savior's door with some mysterious sin that he has not known about and paid for.

Furthermore, no statute of limitations will apply. The justification from Christ will never expire. The atonement does not wear out, dry out, spoil or disintegrate over time. It is not affected by gravity, friction, or any natural force of thermodynamics. It is perpetual and never-ending. Once we are cleansed through the blood of Christ, we are clean forever. Stains will not reappear. Scars will not resurface. The warranty will never expire. We will never need to look over our shoulder and wonder if the dream will evaporate and we will wake up one day to find ourselves back in our old life. As long as we keep our eyes on Christ, trust in him, follow him, and look constantly to him for redemption, he will never let us down in even the smallest detail. Because he is infinite, his atonement is infinite. Because he us eternal, his atonement is eternal. Because he is perfect, his atonement is perfect. You cannot get better than infinitely and eternally perfect.

Alma 7:20

I perceive that it has been made known unto you, by the testimony of his word, that he cannot walk in crooked paths; neither doth he vary from that which he hath said; neither hath he a shadow of turning from the right to the left, or from that which is right to that which is wrong; therefore, his course is one eternal round.

Christ is totally trustworthy. We need never fear that he will change his mind, or withdraw his promises, or withhold his love. He never gets distracted or tired. We never have to wonder about him. Thus he is the Rock, immovable, unchanging, anchored, steadfast, solid to the core. Even if the seemingly eternal mountains are worn away by time and erosion, the true Rock will stand forever. That is the One in whom we trust.
