First Nephi 8:3

And behold, because of the thing which I have seen, I have reason to rejoice in the Lord because of Nephi and also of Sam; for I have reason to suppose that they, and also many of their seed, will be saved.

The gathering of literal, physical seeds, which introduced this chapter, becomes an allegory for Lehi's vision of the future of his seed or posterity. Lehi receives a gift of knowledge about the future of his family. Alone in the wilderness, headed for an unknown promised land, reason suggests that this little band will not survive. Yet the Lord has big plans for this family, and he gives peace to Father Lehi’s heart by letting him know that his journey is not in vain. If we ask him, God will let each of us know that our journey in this life is not in vain.
