First Nephi 16:10

And it came to pass that as my father arose in the morning, and went forth to the tent door, to his great astonishment he beheld upon the ground a round ball of curious workmanship; and it was of fine brass. And within the ball were two spindles; and the one pointed the way whither we should go into the wilderness.

Lehi and his family are the recipients of a miracle in the form of a brass ball, which we learn later is called the Liahona. The Liahona is a tangible symbol of a spiritual truth for a group of Jews who live the Law of Moses, which is full of symbolic truths. The instruction manual that comes with the Liahona -- actually it is printed right on the ball -- informs Lehi that this tool will guide him and his family through the wilderness to the promised land. The spiritual truth symbolized by the Liahona is the power of the Holy Ghost. Just as the Liahona revealed to Lehi what he needed to know to take his family safely through the wilderness of the Arabian desert, the the Holy Ghost, who is no less a miracle than a shiny brass ball in the middle of the desert, will reveal to us how to take ourselves and our family through the wilderness of mortality. The Liahona landed Lehi in the Promised Land. The Holy Ghost will likewise land us in the promised land of the Celestial Kingdom.
